Waffles are the ultimate indulgent breakfast. I got my first waffle iron a long time ago and it has become a family favorite. I am actually required to bring my waffle iron with me on family vacations so we can have waffles for breakfast.
I’ll start this post by saying you’re going to need a good waffle iron if you don’t already have one. There are very good quality waffle irons out there that are extremely affordable and it is 100% worth the investment. I typically go for a Belgian waffle maker, they will give you a little bit of a thicker waffle. This gives you the perfect crunchy outside and soft inside. I also like to make sure the iron has adjustable heat. Some like crispier, some like gooey. With adjustable heat, you can keep everybody happy. I currently have a Cuisinart Belgian Waffle Maker that was under $50 and it is perfect. Now, if you are wanting to make waffles for a crowd, I recommend the Breville Waffle Maker. This bad boy makes 4 waffles at a time which is great if you are cooking for more than 1 or 2.
Alright, here’s my secret. I use Bisquick for my waffles. I almost feel silly posting this recipe because it’s so simple. I have made so many different homemade waffle mixes and nothing comes out as good as this simple recipe. I am convinced the secret to a perfect waffle is Bisquick and buttermilk. Buttermilk makes the waffle have a perfect texture and a tiny bit of tang. I promise if you use this recipe, you’ll have perfect, restaurant worthy waffles. Every. Time.
I put some orange zest and dark chocolate chips in this recipe. You obviously can omit these two items for plain waffles, but the orange chocolate ones are my absolute favorite, they are out of this world. This recipe is completely customizable. Add any kind of chocolate, fruit or nuts and they will be delicious. I topped mine with simple melted butter and regular syrup. Get creative and tell me your favorite kind of waffle!
Makes 3-4 waffles. Double or even triple recipe if needed.
2 cups Bisquick baking mix
1 1/3 cup buttermilk
2 tablespoons organic canola oil
1 large egg
zest from one orange
1 cup dark chocolate chips
syrup, butter and desired fruit for topping
Preheat your waffle maker to desired heat. Spray with nonstick cooking spray.
Place all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Batter should be slightly thicker than pancake batter.
Place batter in the center of waffle maker, being careful not to overfill.
Cook until slightly browned and crispy on the top.
Enjoy right away!
